Cathedral city

Winchester. Further out, same standards.

Winchester sits beyond the studio’s usual ground — Georgian terraces, walled town gardens, new development on the edges. The distance changes; what goes into the build doesn’t.

Gardens here

Cathedral city with a dense historic core — Georgian and Victorian terraces, many within conservation areas, gardens often compact and walled. The edges tell a different story: newer development brings larger plots and more scope for a full hardscape build from a clean slate.

Winchester sits in the Itchen valley, on chalk, with the water meadows either side of the river as the clearest sign of it — ground that doesn't behave as uniformly as the postcode's chalk reputation suggests, especially close to the water. We go into what that means for a drainage plan, and what the conservation area restricts before any of it starts, in building around the conservation line.

Working the area

North up the M3 — part of a deliberate move into more of Hampshire’s still-driveable ground. The studio works best when the brief is meaningful, wherever the postcode.

Material decisions

Reclaimed brick and York stone suit the conservation streets; the newer plots on the city’s edges take the fuller studio palette — porcelain, sleeper structures, a coordinated build from bare ground. Either way, the same sub-bases and mortar beds go in, regardless of postcode.

In practice

The studio archive doesn't yet feature a Winchester project. Full garden transformation, Fareham — a complete front-and-rear rebuild in Kandla Grey porcelain — is the clearest indication of the standard a Winchester brief would get. The work is the same wherever it happens; only the postcode is new.

For what the city's conservation-area status actually restricts before any of that starts, see building around the conservation line.

Selectively — Winchester is part of a deliberate move into more of Hampshire's still-driveable ground, up the M3. We take on briefs that are worth the drive.

Does the conservation area restrict what I can build?

In large parts of central Winchester, yes — permission is generally needed for front-garden hardstanding, walls, gates and fencing, and mature trees are protected too. Full detail in building around the conservation line.

Have you completed a project in Winchester?

Not yet. Full garden transformation, Fareham — a complete front-and-rear rebuild in Kandla Grey porcelain — is the clearest indication of the standard a Winchester brief would get.

Ryan transformed my garden beautifully and I couldn't be happier with the finished result. He put a lot of care into every part of the job, came up with a great design, and delivered everything to an exceptionally high standard. His attention to detail really stood out, and while his pricing was very competitive, the final result looked premium in every way. A genuine 5-star service from start to finish.
