Gosport. Naval ground.

Naval-town housing typologies — Victorian terraces, post-war estates, newer waterfront developments. Garden briefs here run the full range.

Gardens here

Wide range. Historic dockside terraces (Old Gosport, Forton, Brockhurst) with very small walled rear yards. 1950s-70s council and private estates with mid-size suburban gardens. Newer waterfront developments around Stokes Bay and Haslar Marina with smaller, more architectural plots.

Garden sizes vary from ten square metres in some Victorian terraces to several hundred in the older suburbs. Salt exposure is a factor on the seaward side.

Working the area

Thirty to thirty-five minutes from the studio via the M27 and A27. Selective work — full hardscape briefs and considered builds rather than small piecemeal jobs.

Material decisions

Choice depends heavily on which Gosport. Terrace yards want tight, tidy palettes — one paving material, simple edging, minimal joinery. Suburban gardens accept the full studio range. Waterfront housing benefits from coastal specification (porcelain, marine-grade stainless, salt-tolerant planting).

In practice

The studio archive doesn't yet feature a Gosport project. The closest reference builds are in Warsash, twenty minutes away by water (longer by road).
